MiX Telematics Limited was originally established in 1996 as TeliMatrix - a vehicle tracking and recovery business operating under the Matrix Vehicle Tracking brand. In 2005 the business of TeliMatrix was sold to Matrix Vehicle Tracking (Pty) Limited to accommodate the introduction of Kagiso as an empowerment partner. Effective 1 October 2007 TeliMatrix acquired Omnibridge, the fleet and vehicle management operations previously owned by Control Instruments Group Limited. This acquisition created an integrated group focusing on all levels of vehicle telematics. The Group listed on the JSE on 12 November 2007 in the Business Support Services sector under the “MiX” short code and renamed to MiX Telematics in 2008. Formerly known as Matrix Vehicle Tracking, the business was founded in 1996 by current MiX Telematics CEO Stefan Joselowitz and is one of the largest vehicle tracking and recovery businesses in South Africa. Now trading as MiX Telematics Africa, the business’s core activity is stolen vehicle recovery, personal safety and the provision of enterprise fleet solutions. The business operates its own helicopter and a network of dedicated ground response teams throughout South Africa. It has the largest GSM tracking subscriber base in South Africa and in its 12 years of operation the business has developed some of the most advanced vehicle recovery units in the market.
Born out of OmniBridge's (now MiX Telematics International) acquisition of the Siemens fleet management business in 2007, MiX Telematics UK and MiX Telematics Europe forms the hub of the Group’s sales distribution into Europe and the Middle East with offices in the UK. The business owns and operates the Datatrak vehicle tracking network as well as a unique vehicle fitment centre providing a one-stop-shop solution companies undertaking van conversions.

The company’s lineage parallels the history of onboard computers (OBCs) because “Tripmaster” was the first such device on the market.
